Passage #482: 8 December 2018
Lower Expectations
Are you excited yet? We said, ARE YOU EXCITED YET?! We can't hear you! You may argue that this is because we are writing a ride description on a website rather than speaking face-to-face. But we imagine that it is because we have told you to lower your expectations (it's right up there, the very theme of the ride!) and you thought that meant you should be less excited.
This is, of course, the logical response. These weekend rides are generally our chance to get more ambitious, to go further, to reach for those higher peaks. Having the expanse of a full day, rather than merely an evening, allows us to step it up a notch! The key word in that, more of than not, is “up.”
But, well, there are plenty of exciting things to be found when you go low. For one, we'll be traveling lower on the map than we have before. Our starting point is just about the lowest we've been before -- and then we head south from there. Always nice to explore new territory. But there are also simply plenty of trails and valleys and tunnels and connections to be found in low-lying areas. And, because we're not all tired out from climbing, we can perhaps enjoy them all the more!
So, yeah, this weekend's route definitely does not grasp for the epic. It is more a gradual accumulation of small surprises in peripheral places. So keep your expectations low, prepare for the unspectacular. And, by that, we mean: GET EXCITED!
