Passage #474: 10 October 2018

The Lively Hours

We strive to present a varied picture of the city, or at least as varied a picture as one can manage while passing through it at bicycle speeds. Fortunately, variety is easy to come by, all the more so because the ride spans a period of transition -- between evening and late night -- when the changes in the street life are most dramatic.

But variety in itself, just one thing after another after another, is not an unmitigated virtue. It is invigorating, entertaining even, but it provides an imperfect picture of the shifts that are constantly taking place around us: changes in light; changes in sound; changes in social relations. Before we can really understand a place, we have moved on.

One might even argue that the most accurate picture of a place could be obtained by simply standing still. But of course this is a bike ride and not a bike stand-around-in-one-place, so the best we can offer is three inexact repetitions of the same loop through the city, to better appreciate the shifts that occur during these lively hours.
