Passage #318: 23 September 2015
Halo Vision
We are fond of hills because, among other reasons, hilltops are wonderful places. (They are! At night, especially!) But when the hilltops are occupied, fenced off, or otherwise inaccessible, we are denied the full hilltop experience. So sometimes the best we can do is ride in a circle around the peak, experiencing in parts what would otherwise strike us all at once.
Now here is where you might expect us to throw in some circumlocutions about mountain kings or Brocken spectres or other notions vaguely related to the pattern of round shapes in high places. But that would seem frivolous at this late hour. Why talk around the subject, we say, when we will soon be riding around it instead?
